Another frankinstine build begins. 3 years ago I bought a Daihatsu Rocky F300 with a blown cracked and warped head.
Thinking I would chew on what motor I could put in it as original parts are nightmare to find for these vehicles. I would look through online classifieds on the weekend for cheap cars with running motors.
Well I own a 1978 300d and love my om617.912 (non turbo) and thought I wonder if I could get that motor version in in the rocky. I found doomsdaydiesel.net when looking for adapter kits that would allow me to shoe horn this motor version in a rocky.
I started thinking about how to get the om617 mated to the original rocky transmission.
I can weld up my own adapter plate so it comes down to the output shaft size/splines of the rocky transmission to a clutch disk and plate that will mount to the 22RE flywheel from doomsdaydiesel.
The Daihatsu Rocky has a 20 spline, 0.875 in input shaft. The 1994 Toyota has a 21 Spline, 1.125 in input shaft. So I x-ed my fingers and started looking for Toyota's that might have a clutch plate and disk that match up.
I found one kit that should work for a Toyota 5SFE motors. Aisin Clutch Kits CKT-027 I found the local parts store had both the 5SFE AISIN CKT-027 kit and the 22RE AISIN CKT-049 kit. After putting both next to and ontop of each other it is a match. So it will bolt right to the 22RE flywheel from doomsdaydiesel !!!!
5SFE AISIN CKT-027 disk is 225mm
22RE AISIN CKT-049 disk is 235mm
Daihatsu Rocky stock disk is 200mm
My rocky came with a 1.6l with 88 HP @ 4600 RPM and 116 lb-ft @ 3000 RPM
the om617.91X 3.0l came with 79 HP @ 4000 RPM and 127 lb⋅ft @ 2400 rpm
The above numbers make me not concerned about the slightly bigger than stock and smaller than 22RE disk.
Next up is checking that the pilot bearing from a 5SFE motor fits in the pilot bearing adapter doomsdaydiesel sells in his kit.
It is going to be a few months before I can drive 14hrs and grab the rocky from the land I have it covered and stored on. But in preparation for making this swap happen I found a om617.910 motor locally that someone had swapped into a 1974 220d in the late 90's. The car was a no floor pans, rusted out underneath, interior moss mess of a loss but the motor runs fine. Just towed it and pushed it into the old factory garage I lease.
I've done two frankinstine swaps in my life. A 1990's b230 turbo motor into a 140 volvo finsihed. That was a hoot to drive and a s10 v6 into a amazon 122 but life happend and I never got the drive shaft and rear end finished but the motor and tranny were in and square.
Its been a decade but I'm ready to give this a go again. I'll keep updating this thread with build pictures as I move along. Want it documented to save others time if they decide to go this route.
Got the motor out!
OM617.910 has the AC compressor bracket blocking the Front Engine Hoist Mount from Doomsday.
After getting that out of the way the Front Engine Hoist Mount from Doomsday fit just fine.
There was some bolt length issues. The OM617.910 AC Bracket bolt is a m12x1.25 42mm and I needed it to be 20mm (plumbers tape is for marking after bolt bottom out)
Also 2 of the water pump bolts are too long to install after removing bracket so I had to buy some shorter replacements.
Just documenting things .. so other or myself will know in 10 years.
I now have the Rocky from North Carolina up in Detroit.
Been going back and forth making room in Rocky motor bay and pecking at the motor pull of the 0m617
Radiator has been kicking my butt. I don't want to damage it as its a solid end cap unit.
Next update will be motor out. Give me a month. This is going to be a slow as I'm not retired 😅
