Alrighty, where to start? I have a toyota rock crawler that currently has a 22re that is barely running and smokes like crazy. I determined I wanted to replace the motor but the availablinty of a 22re at a reasonable cost is pretty non-exsitaint. So I decieded I was going to do the typical LS sawp. I found a local yard that was going to sell me a LS 4.8L v8 with a little less than 200k miles for $1600, just for the motor, ecu, etc. While searched various swaps I saw a video of a guy starting and running a motor on the ground without a computer and a bunch of wiring, just a battery, screw driver and fuel. After much research I found out it was an OM617 and that Doomsday Diesel made parts to make the swap pretty easy. This led to my search of a donor vehicle. After a bit of a search I found a 1992 Mercedes 300D turbo for $350 dollar. I researched and found the vehicle had the OM602 which is reported to be the new and improved OM617, lighter, more power, etc. I also found that Doomsday Diesel made an adaptor to mate the OM602 to a toyota transmission. So I bought the whole car pulled the motor and other various parts and resold the car for $300. I also found there is very limtied documentation of OM602/22re swaps so I figured I was start and document the journey.
