Newbie here. Question about increasing torque output. From all I have read about the 617 for it being a 3.0 liter turbo diesel it is weak on the torque side. I have a few questions. One is let's say on an intercooled setup what is the max boost pressure? Is 20-25 psi out of line? Should I drop the compression of 21:1 ? Or is the lack of torque a camshaft issue? I ask this because I have recently purchased a 404 unimog which came in the bed so either I build this or swap another engine . Is 350 lb-feet of torque possible?

Imagine the OM617 as a 22R that runs on diesel instead of gas. Very similar stroke/bore. It's one of the highest revving production diesels of its time. They're built for highway speed, not stump pulling.
Of course, since it's one of the very few candidates for a Toyota, my aim has always been to modify it to meet the needs of the Toyota rock-crawling community. I've done this by finding better turbo's that spool lower in the RPM range ( https://www.doomsdaydiesel.net/turbochargers-1 ). Since you are wanting max power, you'll need a 7.5mm pump from Sweden/Dieselmeken. You'll hit your power goal that way.
